ONE of the questions that cropped up during my recent live webchat was about the possible candidates for the role of Captain America in the upcoming movie.
There's been a lot of interest and rumours over who might take the lead role. Last summer, John Barrowman, who plays Captain Jack Harkness in Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood, said he'd be interested in the role; and at one point Will Smith was linked to the part, with the rumour gaining traction because there has been a black Captain America in the comics.
As casting is bound to be on Marvel's minds, I thought I'd do some speculating on the possibilities. I'll look at some of the fan suggestions and rumoured candidates one by one, and give them a rating, beginning with Channing Tatum.
Tatum, 28, a former model, will be seen in this August's action flick G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra, based on the line of action figures. He plays lead soldier Conrad Hauser aka Duke.
He definitely has the stereotypical look of a G.I. (a US soldier) which fits in with Captain America's background as a supersoldier. G.I. Joe should give us a clearer idea of whether he has the ability and presence to play Captain America.
Tatum is also playing military roles in upcoming films Pinkville (about the My Lai Massacre, in which hundreds of Vietnamese civilians were killed by U.S. soldiers) and Dear John (about a soldier who falls for a college student while home on leave) which strengthens his suitability.
Tatum just admitted to MTV that he has been urged to go after the Captain America role - but he believes Will Smith to be a better choice.
"When I'd heard that Will Smith was [interested], I'm just like, 'God, yeah. That's who should play it,'" said Tatum. "It would be a different Captain America than we all know in the comic, but it's perfect."
Previously, Tatum revealed to MTV that he had met with Thor director Kenneth Branagh about playing the lead role of the superhero thunder god in the Marvel comic book adaptation. But he said: "I think they're looking for someone more Nordic-looking". He certainly looks more of a Captain America than a Thor and it does show he's in Marvel's sights at least, which raises the possibilities considerably.
The Marvel Studios' film adaptation, The First Avenger: Captain America, is being written by Chronicles of Narnia scribes Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely and will be directed by Joe Johnston. It's set for release on July 22, 2011. The character will then appear in The Avengers team-up movie slated for May 4, 2012.
Captain America is the alter-ego of Second World War soldier Steve Rogers, whose capabilities were enhanced to their peak by a 'supersoldier' serum. Hurled by an explosion into the North Atlantic ocean, he remained frozen in suspended animation until his body was found and revived by the Avengers decades later.
