Memorial to the fighters for Soviet power in Estonia, 1975

Last night of the holiday = reflection time. All in all I really enjoyed it. The city was beautiful, just a nice amount to see and do though any longer would’ve been too long I think.

What I won’t miss, however, is being gawked at. Seriously, every day I’ve been here at least 5 people have just openly stared at me as I’ve walked past/been standing near them. I thought it might’ve been my hair but lots of people had red hair. Maybe it was my clothes - I usually wore an oversized t-shirt, not low cut, with leggings and my biker/army boots like I would back home. I didn’t even do wing liner til tonight. I definitely got stared at tonight. A lot. Seems the people of Tallinn enjoy judging the rockabilly/50’s look =\

So now we’re off to bed. I’m going home home on the way home tomorrow as the train stops in my station but everytime I mention it, Mike gets incredibly huffy. I think he’s annoyed I’m leaving him to get the suitcase home by himself. I don’t really care tbh because I want to see my parents so badly. I’ve never come back off holiday and not seen them straight away. I have stories to tell and pictures to show and I’ll have lost my enthusiasm by the time I see them next/move back home. So he can huff and puff all he wants cos this homebird is flying away home…

tallinn is a city that is in a constant state of renaissance fair-ness. our first night there, we found one of many medieval themed restaurants. this one was recommended by rick steves, whom i love. they had the most delicious elk pies. i ate 1-2 elk pies every day for lunch. this is what i look like when i eat elk pies.

17.04.2011 - White Lies @ Tallinn, Estonia

Again, again, again please.

It kind of rhymes. I also woke up covered in dirt the other morning because I full on fell down on…I don’t know, something dirty. Maybe the street. Many shenanigans went down that night; I spent at least half of it handcuffed to an Australian guy because the key broke and they had to go find another one. Then we tried to make a human pyramid on the street but luckily one of the staff stopped us before it got past the base. Oh, and I played a lot of beer pong and won every time. That was because the guy on my team used to be in a fraternity.

Oh, right, Tallinn. I left a day later than I intended because I watched The Hangover 2 in Riga instead of getting on the bus. I managed to leave the next day and had a walk around the city. I also went to Depeche Mode Bar (all Depeche Mode all the time), which I’d been looking forward to all trip. A little masochism seemed appropriate, so I ordered the grossest thing on the menu: a shot with absinthe, some other horrible liquor, tabasco sauce, and whipped cream on top. Uuhguhagah tastes like burning…but I did feel like a bad ass afterwards, and had the overwhelming urge to arm wrestle.

OH RIGHT, Tallinn. It’s the capital of Estonia. Yep. Oh, and it has a really well-preserved Old Town. And it has Depeche Mode Bar. My first full day I went on a walking tour and then wandered around an old abandoned prison where everything has been left as-is. It was actually really cool, but it’s definitely an enter-at-your-own-risk sort of place.

After that productive day, it’s been mostly madness. Madness, and beer pong. I did manage to eat a pizza and go on a guided tour of the aforementioned prison. And watch Shrek 2 and Blades of Glory. Oh, and most importantly, I finally got some shorts yesterday! Naturally, it’s raining today. I’m wearing them anyway though, with tights. Probably a good thing, considering my legs are an absolute mess of mosquito bites and bruises. I also seem to be incapable of shaving my legs.

I meant to go somewhere else in Estonia and then come back to Tallinn for my flight on Thursday, but I’m just staying here. That’s fine, because I kind of want to chill for a bit before Hurricane Festival. I’m really not looking forward to getting on a plane again…I need to ditch a lot of stuff (winter clothes) before then. Also, my backpack is ripping. And my compressor bag broke a long time ago.
