Aesculapieion, Kos:
Today we find on the Greek island of Kos the Aesculapieion, a relic to those early days when people went to be healed by sleeping and dreaming in the temples. There, patients with various forms of illness were treated following the methods of Aesculapius. During the day, attention would be paid to diet and excercise. But at night the real work would commence when the patient would recline on a couch within the temple and sleep and dream.
Dream healing was considered by ancient physicians to be the highest form and best therapy for the treatment of illness. Aristides in his work Oratorio wrote:
“When the priest-physician came, ready to help with his own light, the dreams of the patient were revealed to him. Hearing them [the priest] yielded to the god because in his priestly wisdom he recognised the True Physician prescribing.”
